내 아들 조쉬는 알라스카의 코디악에서 연어를 잡아서 파는 어부입니다. 얼마 전에 그는 자기 배의 수백 미터 앞에서 좁은 해협을 지나가는 작은 배 한 척을 찍은 사진을 보내왔습니다. 그 사진에는 폭풍우를 동반한 불길한 구름이 수평선 위로 어렴풋이 보이고 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님의 섭리와 인자한 돌보심의 표시인 무지개가 그 작은 배를 에워싸며 해협 한쪽에서 그 반대쪽까지 걸쳐 있었습니다.
그 사진은 이 땅에서의 우리의 항해를 반영해 보여줍니다. 우리는 불확실한 미래로 항해하며 가지만, 하나님의 신실하심이 우리를 둘러싸고 있습니다!
예수님의 제자들도 폭풍우로 둘러싸인 적이 있었는데, 주님은 그 일을 통해 그들에게 하나님의 능력과 신실하심에 대해 가르쳐주셨습니다(마 8:23-27). 우리는 불확실한 인생에 대한 해답을 찾고, 가까이 다가오는 미래를 보면서 그 때 무슨 일이 일어날까 궁금해 합니다. 청교도 시인 존 케블은 그의 시에 이것을 잘 표현했는데, 거기에서 그는 가까이 다가오는 미래를 본다고 썼습니다. 그러나 그는 미래를 보며 “하나님께서 무엇을 하시는지 보려고 기다리고” 있었습니다.
젊으나 늙으나 우리 모두는 불확실한 미래와 마주합니다. 하나님의 대답은 무엇이 우리를 기다리고 있건, 하나님의 사랑과 선하심이 우리를 둘러싸고 있다는 것입니다. 우리는 기다리며 하나님이 무엇을 하시는지 보기만 하면 됩니다!
오늘 하나님을 신뢰하는데 있어 필요한 것이 무엇입니까?
우리는 하나님의 신실하심으로 둘러싸인 불확실한 미래로 항해한다!

What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him! v. 27
Our son, Josh, is a commercial salmon fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska. Some time ago he sent me a photograph he took of a tiny vessel a few hundred yards ahead of his boat moving through a narrow pass. Ominous storm clouds loom on the horizon. But a rainbow, the sign of God’s providence and loving care, stretches from one side of the pass to the other, encircling the little boat.
The photograph reflects our earthly voyage: We sail into an uncertain future, but we are surrounded by the faithfulness of God!
Jesus’ disciples were surrounded by a storm, and He used the experience to teach them about the power and faithfulness of God (Matt. 8:23-27). We seek answers for the uncertainties of life. We watch the future growing closer and wonder what will happen to us there. Puritan poet John Keble captured this in one of his poems in which he watched the future as it drew near. Butas he watched he was “waiting to see what God will do.”
Whether young or old we all face uncertain futures. Heaven answers: God’s love and goodness encircle us no matter what awaits us. We wait and see what God will do! David Roper
