노예로 태어나 어린 소녀 때 학대를 받았던 해리엇 터브먼(1822?-1913)은 어머니가 들려준 성경이야기에서 빛나는 희망의 광선을 발견했습니다. 그녀는 바로왕 밑에서의 노예생활에서 벗어난 이스라엘의 이야기에서 자기 백성이 자유롭기를 바라는 하나님의 모습을 보았습니다.
해리엇은 메릴랜드주 경계선을 넘어 노예생활로부터 자유롭게 되었습니다. 하지만 아직도 많은 사람들이 노예 상태에 붙들려 있는 것을 알고 있었기에 자기 혼자 만족하고 있을 수 없었습니다. 그래서 개인적인 위험을 감수하며 아직도 노예생활을 하는 사람들을 자유롭게 하기 위해 열 번 이상의 구조작업을 수행했습니다. “한번 죽을 뿐이지요.”라고 그녀는 말했습니다.
해리엇은 “몸은 죽여도 영혼은 능히 죽이지 못하는 자들을 두려워하지 말라”(마 10:28)라는 말씀의 진리를 알고 있었습니다. 이 말씀은 예수님이 제자들을 처음으로 전도하러 보내시면서 하셨던 말씀입니다. 주님은 제자들이 위험을 당하고, 모든 사람들이 다 제자들을 따뜻하게 맞이하지는 않을 것이라는 점을 알고 계셨습니다. 그러면 왜 주님은 제자들이 위험하도록 놔두셨을까요? 바로 앞 장에 그 답이 있습니다. “무리를 보시고 [예수께서] 불쌍히 여기시니 이는 그들이 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 기진함이라”(9:36).
해리엇 터브먼이 아직도 노예제도에 갇힌 사람들을 잊을 수 없었던 그 모습은, 우리가 아직 죄에 갇혀 있을 때 우리를 잊지 않으신 그리스도의 모습을 보여줍니다. 그녀의 용기 있는 본보기는 우리에게 세상에 소망 없이 사는 사람들을 기억하도록 감화시켜줍니다.
주님, 주님 안에서 평화와 목적을 찾게 하시고, 주님을 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있게 하소서.
그리스도를 알고 섬길 때 진정한 자유를 누릴 수 있다.
Can’t Die But Once

Born into slavery and badly treated as a young girl, Harriet Tubman (c. 1822–1913) found a shining ray of hope in the Bible stories her mother told. The account of Israel’s escape from slavery under Pharaoh showed her a God who desired freedom for His people.
Harriet found freedom when she slipped over the Maryland state line and out of slavery. She couldn’t remain content, however, knowing so many were still trapped in captivity. So she led more than a dozen rescue missions to free those still in slavery, dismissing the personal danger. “I can’t die but once,” she said.
Harriet knew the truth of the statement: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul” (Matt. 10:28). Jesus spoke those words as He sent His disciples on their first mission. He knew they would face danger, and not everyone would receive them warmly. So why expose the disciples to the risk? The answer is found in the previous chapter. “When he saw the crowds, [Jesus] had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (9:36).
When Harriet Tubman couldn’t forget those still trapped in slavery, she showed us a picture of Christ, who did not forget us when we were trapped in our sins. Her courageous example inspires us to remember those who remain without hope in the world. Tim Gustafson
