천지는 없어질지언정 내 말은 없어지지 아니하리라-마태복음 24:35
제2차 세계대전 초기에 공중에서 투하된 폭탄들이 폴란드의 바르샤바를 대부분 초토화시켰습니다. 시멘트 블록들과 파열된 배수관, 그리고 유리 파편들이 그 거대한 도시 사방에 흩어졌습니다. 그러나 그 도시 중심지에 손상되기는 했지만 대부분이 굳건히 서있는 건물이 하나 있었습니다. 그것은 ‘영국 및 해외 성경협회’의 폴란드 본부 건물이었습니다. 아직 남아있던 그 건물의 벽에는 “천지는 없어질지언정 내 말은 없어지지 아니하리라” (마 24:35)라는 성경구절이 아직도 읽을 수 있게 남아 있었습니다.
이 말씀은 제자들이 “세상 끝”에 대해 물었을 때(3절) 예수님이 그들에게 용기를 주기 위해 하신 말씀입니다. 그러나 주님의 이 말씀은 오늘날 전쟁과 같은 상황에 놓여있는 우리에게도 용기를 줍니다. 우리가 산산이 깨어진 꿈의 파편 속에 서 있다 하더라도, 우리는 여전히 하나님의 불멸의 성품과 주권, 그리고 약속을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
시편기자는 “여호와여 주의 말씀은 영원히 하늘에 굳게 섰사오며”(시 119:89)라고 기록하였습니다. 그러나 그것은 사실 하나님의 말씀을 뜻하기 보다는 하나님의 위대한 성품을 더 말하고 있습니다. 그래서 시편기자는 “주의 성실하심은 대대에 이르나이다”(90절)라고도 말할 수 있었던 것입니다.
우리가 충격적인 일들을 경험할 때, 우리는 그것들을 절망적이거나 아니면 희망적인 어떤 것으로 규정할 수 있을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님이 우리를 우리의 상황 속에 그대로 버려두지 않으실 것이기에, 우리는 확신 있게 희망적으로 바라볼 수 있습니다. 없어지지 않을 하나님의 말씀이 하나님의 무한하신 사랑을 확신시켜줍니다.
주님, 주님의 말씀을 선물로 주시니 감사합니다. 우리에게 주시는 그 말씀이 참되고 영원하며, 우리를 인도해주시니 감사합니다. 주님이 말씀하시는 모든 것을 믿고 의지할 수 있도록 도와주소서.
우리는 하나님의 변함없는 말씀을 믿을 수 있다.
God’s Enduring Word

At the beginning of World War II, aerial bombings flattened much of Warsaw, Poland. Cement blocks, ruptured plumbing, and shards of glass lay strewn across the great city. In the downtown area, however, most of one damaged building still stubbornly stood. It was the Polish headquarters for the British and Foreign Bible Society. Still legible on a surviving wall were these words: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matt. 24:35).
Jesus made that statement to encourage His disciples when they asked Him about the “end of the age” (v. 3). But His words also give us courage in the midst of our embattled situation today. Standing in the rubble of our shattered dreams, we can still find confidence in God’s indestructible character, sovereignty, and promises.
The psalmist wrote: “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens” (Ps. 119:89). But it is more than the word of the Lord; it is His very character. That is why the psalmist could also say, “Your faithfulness continues through all generations” (v. 90).
As we face devastating experiences, we can define them either in terms of despair or of hope. Because God will not abandon us to our circumstances, we can confidently choose hope. His enduring Word assures us of His unfailing love. Dennis Fisher
Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Your Word. Thank You for its truth, its timelessness, and the guidance You give us by that Word. Help us believe and trust everything You say.
