문학작품에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 장면 중의 하나는 데이비드 코퍼필드가 못된 양아버지에게 학대받을 때 그의 씩씩한 고모가 조카를 위해 양아버지와 맞서는 장면입니다. 이 장면은 그 주인공의 이름이 제목인 찰스 디킨스의 소설에 나옵니다.
데이비드 코퍼필드가 그의 고모 집에 갔을 때, 양아버지가 바로 그의 뒤를 쫓아 나타납니다. 벳시 트로트우드 고모는 사악한 머드스톤을 보고는 기분이 상해, 자기 조카를 괴롭힌 일들을 하나하나 열거하며 그 각각의 잔인한 행동들의 책임을 물으며 그를 꼼짝 못하게 만듭니다. 그녀의 책망이 너무나 설득력 있고 사실 그대로여서, 평소에 호전적이던 머드스톤도 마침내 아무 말도 못하고 떠납니다. 강하면서도 선량한 벳시 고모의 인성으로 말미암아 데이비드는 마침내 공정한 대우를 받게 됩니다.
강하면서도 선량하시며, 언젠가 이 세상의 잘못된 것들을 바로잡아 주실 이가 또 한 분 계십니다. 예수님께서 다시 오실 때 주님은 능력 있는 천사들과 함께 하늘에서 내려오실 것입니다. 그리고 “환난 받는 자들에게 안식으로 갚으시고” 그분의 자녀들을 괴롭힌 자들을 결코 모른 척하지 않으실 것입니다(살후 1:6-7). 그날이 올 때까지 예수님은 우리가 용기를 갖고 견고히 서 있기를 바라십니다. 이 땅에서 우리가 어떤 어려움을 겪더라도 우리는 영원히 안전합니다.
사랑하는 하나님, 저희를 보호해주시고 하나님의 성령을 통해 저희에게 지혜를 베푸소서. 모든 일을 함에 있어 올바르고 공정하게 하셔서, 저희가 하나님을 잘 드러낼 수 있게 하소서.
언젠가 하나님께서 잘못된 모든 것을 바로 잡아주실 것이다.
Relief for the Troubled
The Bible in a Year 2 Samuel 19–20 and Luke 18:1-23

One of my favorite scenes in literature occurs when a feisty aunt confronts an evil stepfather over the abuse of her nephew, David Copperfield. This scene takes place in Charles Dickens’ novel named after the main character.
When David Copperfield shows up at his aunt’s house, his stepfather is not far behind. Aunt Betsy Trotwood is not pleased to see the malicious Mr. Murdstone. She recounts a list of offenses and does not let him slither out of his responsibility for each act of cruelty. Her charges are so forceful and truthful that Mr. Murdstone—a normally aggressive person—finally leaves without a word. Through the strength and goodness of Aunt Betsy’s character, David finally receives justice.
There is Someone else who is strong and good, and who will one day right the wrongs in our world. When Jesus returns, He will come down from heaven with a group of powerful angels. He will “give relief to you who are troubled,” and He will not ignore those who have created problems for His children (2 Thess. 1:6-7). Until that day, Jesus wants us to stand firm and have courage.
